Google Authenticator is an app for authenticating logins into various online platforms. It was the first 2FA apps to be launched in the year 2010. A decade down the line Google Authenticator is faced with serious downsides. Just to list a few;
- It runs on a few platforms, Android, iOS, and Blackberry to be specific.
- You have to set it up on each individual device if you have multiple devices.
- In case of a password update, you must do it across all the devices installed.
- If you swap phones, you have to blitz the entire app and sync all the accounts afresh.
- Google Authenticator lacks the provision of a passcode or biometric app lock.
I stopped using Google Authenticator a few years back when I realized it wasn’t secure enough. I had used it for quite some time on different websites and apps. But, the more cybersecurity threats increased day by day, the more I became curious about my safety with this Google Authenticator.
Is there an alternative to Google Authenticator?
After searching the internet, and found out that Google Authenticator had become outdated, and there were better solutions to manage passwords. 1Password and LastPass are just a few examples. They both have built-in authenticator apps, runs on multiple devices and platforms.
It’s quick and easy to set up and start using. You just need to open an account, create your unique 1 master password, the only password you need to remember and a password manager like LastPass will remember the rest for you.
Some password managers require a subscription, you where you pay either monthly or yearly. While there are some which you can use for free, like LastPass and still be safe. These solutions are proving to be more reliable, convenient and gaining traction around the globe.
Therefore, if you manage multiple online platforms or websites it’s not recommended to use a single password on all your accounts. That is a risky behavior because if your password lands in the wrong hands, you can easily lose your sensitive data, or even get locked out of your account. It is recommended to use different passwords on different platforms. That’s why password managers come in handy for you don’t have to memorize a bunch of passwords in your head.
